Ngaio Marsh, geb. 1899 in Christchurch, Neuseeland. Ihr Vorname Ngaio (sprich 'Najo') ist ein maorisches Wort und bedeutet soviel wie 'Spiegelungen im Wasser'. Ihren ersten von insgesamt 32 Kriminalromanen schrieb sie 1932 in London, wo sie zunächst als Innenarchitektin arbeitete, nebenbei aber auch malte und Stücke schrieb. 1949 gründete sie die British Commonwealth Theatre Company. Ihre lebenslange Begeisterung für das Theater schlug sich auch in ihren Romanen nieder: Die meisten spielen im Theatermilieu, denn ihre große Leidenschaft galt den Figuren und Dramen Shakespeares. Ngaio Marsh wurde 1978 zum 'Grand Master' der Mystery Writers of America ernannt, zwei Mal für den Edgar-Allan-Poe-Award nominiert und ein Mal mit dem Silver Dagger ausgezeichnet. Sie wird heute in einem Atemzug mit Dorothy Sayers und Agatha Christie genannt und wurde mit ihren Romanen um den adeligen Inspektor Roderick Alleyn weltberühmt. Ngaio Marsh arbeitete und lebte zeitlebens abwechselnd in England und Neuseeland, wo sie 1982 starb.
