Margie Orford, als Tochter südafrikanischer Eltern in London geboren, zog im Alter von sechs Jahren nach Namibia, wo ihre Eltern im Estosha National Park Löwen erforschten. Margie wuchs in Windhoek auf und studierte in Südafrika. Auf dem Höhepunkt der Apartheid wurde sie als Redakteurin der kritischen Studentenzeitung Varsity verhaftet und ein Jahr lang inhaftiert. Ihre Abschlussarbeiten in Philosophie und Englischer Literaturgeschichte schrieb sie im Hochsicherheitstrakt des Gefängnisses. Wieder auf freiem Fuß, wollte sie die Welt sehen und reiste per Anhalter von der iranisch-türkischen Grenze bis nach Amsterdam. Zurück in Südafrika studierte sie bei dem Literaturnobelpreisträger J.M. Coetzee. Sie verbrachte zwei Jahre in England und kehrte nach der Geburt ihrer ersten Tochter in das inzwischen befreite Namibia zurück. Dort arbeitete sie als Publizistin, Journalistin und Filmemacherin. Neben ihren preisgekrönten Zeitungsartikeln und Reportagen veröffentlichte sie Sachbücher und ein wissenschaftliches Werk über weibliches Schreiben in Namibia. Blutsbräute ist ihr erster Roman, der Presse und Publikum im südlichen Afrika im Sturm eroberte. Die Idee zu ihm kam ihr, als sie für eine Reportage über Frauen- und Kinderhandel in Kapstadt recherchierte. Sie lebt mit ihrem Mann und ihren drei Töchtern in Kapstadt.
