Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. My colleagues of the present Faculty will understand that the brief treatment which is accorded those who have been elected to the Faculty since 1885 is not to be attributed to any lack of appreciation of the good work that has been done in the recent period. But I have felt that an exhaustive discussion of their work can come more appropriately at a later time. It is for the same reason that the collection of the portraits of the Faculty includes only those elected to professorships prior to 1890.
