Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. The subject-matter of this book. Treats of pure mechanism, or the kinematics of machines. It is intended for use in the University and Technical Colleges, and is not meant to be a philosophical treatise on the subject; we have the works of Willis, Rankine, anleuleaux for that. It is the outcome of experience gained in lecturing on the subject at the Universities of Cambridge and Liverpool, and at the Royal Naval College, Greenwich. The logical treatment of the subject admittedly presents great difficulties, and it was only after anxious thought that the present arrangement was adopted as being, in the author's Opinion, the most suitable for the average student.
