Author Marilyn Lewis: Marilyn Lewis has lived, studied and taught in a number of countries, including Wales, France, New Zealand and Asia. She has published in the areas or language teaching and learning and of teachers professional development. Marilyn is the author, with Hayo Reinders, of The International Student Handbook, Study Skills for Speakers of English as a Second Language and Facilitating Workshops: A Resource Book for Lecturers and Trainers. In her retirement she enjoys running workshops for teachers in various countries.
Of the few books devoted to this topic none offer a balance between theory and practice.(2005) by Priscilla Osborne. London: Modern English Publications.Osborne's book is highly practical with suggestions and examples for the teacher. Although theory underpins the advice, references are only occasionally mentioned in the text. Osborne offers many sample pages, such as needs analysis forms and course outlines, whereas we have a higher ratio of theory to samples. Also her book is limited to the teaching of English, whereas we are speaking of learning any language.(2002) by Jane Downman and John Shepheard. Chicago: Contemporary Books. This practical guide has almost no references to academic literature or relevant theories. Sections include information such as paying fees and organizing the work space, but references and current research on learning an SLA are not included.(1998) by Marilyn Lewis. Wellington: National Association of ESOL Home Tutors.Marilyn wrote this book for tutors in New Zealand working with refugees and other adult immigrants. Like Osborne's book it concentrates on practical advice.(1991) by Tim Murphey. UK: Longman.Murphey's book too is highly practical, including case studies, techniques and ideas for materials.

With only one learner, it is possible for the teacher to give serious attention to principles of second language acquisition such as motivation, error treatment, and learner autonomy, which are more difficult to address in classroom learning. This book combines theory with practical suggestions, making it invaluable for language tutors.
