John Marsden wurde 1950 in Melbourne, Australien, geboren. Nach einem abgebrochenen Kunst- und Jurastudium war er u. a. Leichenbeschauer, Mitarbeiter bei einem Zirkus und bewachte das älteste Haus Australiens. Mit 28 Jahren fand er seinen Traumberuf und wurde - Lehrer. Seine Bücher wurden in 15 Sprachen übersetzt und erhielten zahlreiche Auszeichungen, darunter den Children's Book of the Year Award 1988.
