James Clavell ist nach seinen eigenen Worten ein halbirischer Engländer mit ein paar schottischen Glanzlichtern, in Australien geboren, Bürger der Vereinigten Staaten mit Wohnsitz in Kalifornien und Kanada oder sonst wo. Als der Krieg ausbrach, besuchte er in England noch die Public School. Von 1940 bis 1946 diente er in der britischen Armee. 1954 begann er zu schreiben. Seine Bücher wurden in zahlreiche Sprachen übersetzt, verfilmt und waren allesamt Welterfolge. James Clavell verstarb 1994.
