Viktor P. Astakhov has more than 30 years experience in metal cutting, cutting tool design, and tool implementation practice, in various industries. He is a professor of Michigan State University and Tool Research and Application Manager of the General Motors Unit of PSMi.

In 1983, he received a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Tula Polytechnic University, Tula-Moscow, Russia, and has since won a number of awards for both his teaching and his research, including the SME James M. Beabers Lifetime Achievement Award. His main research interests include the theory of metal cutting and its applications; cutting tool design, assessment and optimization; machinability of materials; and new tool materials and coatings.

Among the books he has authored are: Tribology of Metal Cutting (2006), Physics of Strength and Fracture Control (2004), and Mechanics of Metal Cutting (1999). He is also the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Advances in Machining and Forming Operations.

This book is both a practical guide and useful reference on the most important aspects of cutting tool design, application and troubleshooting practices. It covers emerging trends, addresses many urgent problems and includes multiple examples.
Addresses many urgent problems face tool manufacturers, application specialists and users within the automotive industry today
What Does It Mean "Metal Cutting"?.- Basic Definitions and Cutting Tool Geometry, Single Point Cutting Tools.- Fundamentals of the Selection of Cutting Tool Geometry Parameters.- Straight Flute and Twist Drills.- Deep-hole Tools.

Geometry of Single-Point Turning Tools and Drills outlines clear objectives of cutting tool geometry selection and optimization, using multiple examples to provide a thorough explanation. It addresses several urgent problems that many present-day tool manufacturers, tool application specialists, and tool users, are facing. It is both a practical guide, offering useful, practical suggestions for the solution of common problems, and a useful reference on the most important aspects of cutting tool design, application, and troubleshooting practices.

Covering emerging trends in cutting tool design, cutting tool geometry, machining regimes, and optimization of machining operations, Geometry of Single-Point Turning Tools and Drills is an indispensable source of information for tool designers, manufacturing engineers, research workers, and students.
