Charles Freger (b. 1975, Bourges, France) is recognised as one of Europe's leading young photographers. Based in Paris, his work has been devoted almost exclusively to portraiture, particularly the study of groups in uniform or costume. Freger is co-founder of the international group of artists POC (Piece of Cake).
The transformation of man to beast is a central aspect of traditional pagan rituals that are centuries old and which celebrate the seasonal cycle, fertility, life and death. In this fascinating book, photographer Charles Freger visits 18 European countries to explore this aspect of European folk culture.
