Daffodils in Winter

I entered the year with confidence. Why? Well, on December 28th a local supermarket was selling British Daffodils at £1 a bunch and daffodils in December proclaim, “If winter comes, can spring be far behind?”

At a time when the media, society, and political predictions seem to emphasize doom and gloom, how we need daffodils of hope to challenge the darkness of despair! According to a recent National Trust report, that logs in painstaking detail the signs of the seasons, last year had been the year when the traditional weather boundaries blurred into one. “Haywire!” was the word the National Trust has opted to describe the weather. Who knows what this year will bring?

Well, consider the words of this old hymn, “It can bring with it nothing, but God WILL see us through. Who gives the lilies clothing, will clothe His children too. Beneath the spreading heavens, no creature but is fed, and He who feeds the ravens, will give His people bread.” Maybe we are disposed to ask for cake, like Marie Antoinette? Contentment, in whatsoever state we are, is great gain.

Daffodils can be found in December! Do you remember the children’s rhyme about the months of the year? “January brings the snow, makes our feet and fingers glow?” Note—they do not fall off, they glow! “February brings the rain, thaws the frozen lake again!” Let it freeze! Frozen lakes will always unfreeze!

God’s promise, which has never been broken since time began, is that there will always be day after night, summer after winter, harvest to follow seedtime, and heat after cold. Daffodils can bloom in winter! How did you enter January? With trepidation? With timidity? Are you tired of trying to get life to work out for you and your family? Do you view the new year, with tears? Is it hard to trust God? In Psalm 34 there is assurance:

“I prayed to the Lord, and he answered me; he freed me from all my fears. The oppressed look to him and are glad; they will never be disappointed. The helpless call to him, and he answers; he saves them from all their troubles. His angel guards those who honor the Lord and rescues them from danger.” (Psalm 34:4–7)
