Christina Condak ist Architektin und Partnerin des Büros NURARCHITEKTUR in Wien. Seit 1997 lehrt sie als Professorin für Entwurf am Institut für Kunst und Architektur an der Akademie der Bildenden Künste Wien.

Michelle Howard leitet in Berlin das Büro constructconcept und lehrt als Professorin für Architektur an der Akademie der Bildenden Künste Wien, wo sie auch die Platform for Construction, Materials and Technology leitet.

Christina Jauernik ist Architektin, künstlerische Forscherin und Tänzerin. Sie ist als Senior Scientist am Institut für Kunst und Architektur der Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien tätig.

Linda Lackner ist Architektin und Architekturtheoretikerin und beschäftigt sich mit Fragestellungen von Sichtbarkeiten, Ein- und Ausschlussmechanismen und der Manifestierung von Ideologien und Vergangenheitspolitiken mittels Architektur und Stadtplanungsmassnahmen. Sie ist zudem Mitglied des interdisziplinären Vereins Team Wien - Initiative für gemeinschaftliche Stadtentwicklung.

Lisa Schmidt-Colinet ist Architektin und als Senior Scientist sowie stellvertretende Leiterin des Instituits für Kunst und Architektur der Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Wien tätig. Daneben führt sie zusammen mit Alexander Schmoeger das Büro schmidt-colinet · schmoeger in Wien.

Angelika Schnell ist Professorin für Architekturtheorie, Architekturgeschichte und Entwurf an der Plattform History Theory Criticism (HTC) der Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Wien.

Eva Sommeregger lebt und arbeitet von Wien aus als Architektin, Forscherin und Lehrerin. Sie ist Mitbegründerin des Büros eyeTry architecture und zudem Senior Researcher am Institute of Contemporary Art, Design and Architecture of Art Academy of Latvia (LMDA) in Riga.

Social issues and experimental approaches to architecture and urban design in times of climate change

For centuries, dealing with cold has been the dominant climatic factor for architectural design in Central Europe. The climate change apparent now assigns this role to heat. Architecture and urban design strive for efficient, resource-saving technical solutions to meet the changing climatic conditions and the energy standards they demand without really questioning customary notions of comfort, forms of living, and urban coexistence. Yet architects must increasingly search for experimental approaches and new ways in which we can live together well in a rapidly warming climate, in particular in cities and metropolitan regions.

Despite a supposed powerlessness in the face of the impending climate catastrophe, the contributions collected in this volume offer a diverse range of narratives that tell of experiences, observations, and the needs of people that inhabit hotter worlds, both real and imagined. What role as climate producers can architecture and the city play in shaping our habitat if these important issues are understood not only in purely technological but also in cultural and social terms?
