Essler, Prof. Dr. phil., is Professor of Philosophy, Emeritus, at the University of Frankfurt am Main and President of the Lauener-Stiftung. His research activity centres on philosophy of science, logics, ontology and epistemology as well as, more recently, on the philosophy of Buddhism. He is a member of the Institut International de Philosophie and has been one of the Refounding Editors of the journal Erkenntnis. His numerous publications include: Analytische Philosophie, Induktive Logik, Wissenschaftstheorie I-IV, Grundzüge der Logik I-II (with R. F. Martínez Cruzado and E. Brendel),Theorie und Erfahrung (with J. Labude and S. Ucsnay), Philosophie des Buddhismus (with U. Mamat).

This series assembles high-quality volumes from different domains of analytical philosophy. Here, analytical philosophy is broadly conceived in terms of a common methodological orientation towards clear formulation and sound argumentation; it is not defined by any philosophical position or school of thought.

The series is edited on behalf of the Lauener Foundation for Analytical Philosophy.

This anthology assembles original contributions by leading analytical philosophers to a broad range of topics on which Suppes has set out ideas which still point the way ahead. All the papers included were originally given at the 1st International Lauener Symposium on Analytical Philosophy, which accompanied the Presentation of the first Lauener Prize to Patrick Suppes. His detailed commentaries on each of the revised articles as well as the added interview elicit a spirit of constructive academic conversation.

The book joins together contributions by Patrick Suppes, Dagfinn Føllesdal, Nancy Cartwright, Wilhelm K. Essler, Steven French, Stephan Hartmann, and Michael Frauchiger. The collection as a whole puts a different and stimulating perspective on a variety of issues in the methodology of science and philosophy.
