This study drafts a history of German dramas dealing with artists. The thread running through the study is that of the ''artist on the stage'' which is relevant for the history both of the drama and the theatre. Account is taken of both historic and fictitious artists. The study encompasses the period from the second half of the 18th century up to the present. Works examined include texts by Goethe, Tieck, Grillparzer, Immermann, Laube, Hebbel, Hofmannsthal, Hauptmann, Dürrenmatt, Weiss, Jandl, Bernhard et al.

Die vorliegende Arbeit entwirft eine Geschichte des deutschsprachigen Künstlerdramas. Leitfaden der Darstellung ist die dramen- und theatergeschichtlich relevante Figur des "Künstlers auf der Bühne". Berücksichtigt werden historische und fiktive Künstler. Die Untersuchung umfasst den Zeitraum von der zweiten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts bis zur Gegenwart. Behandelt werden Werke von Christian Felix Weiße, Goethe, Tieck, Oehlenschläger, Grillparzer, Immermann, Halm, Holtei, Laube, Hebbel, Richard Wagner, Hofmannsthal, Hauptmann, Sorge, Jahnn, Dürrenmatt, Weiss, Jandl, Thomas Bernhard u.a. Ein kurzer Ausblick exponiert postmoderne Entwicklungen.

Literaturgeschichtlich gesehen dominieren im 19. Jahrhundert die pathetischen und finalen Darbietungen, während im 20. Jahrhundert, neben einer singulären politischen Linie, die das Drama der Zeit überhaupt charakterisierende Form der Tragikomödie in den Vordergrund tritt. Darüber hinaus werden mediale Transformationen des Künstlers im Drama bzw. auf der Bühne bemerkbar. Die Arbeit enthält eine Chronologie, eine Bibliographie sowie ein Namen- und Werkregister und ermöglicht so auch den punktuellen Zugang zu interessierenden Einzelthemen.
