Pre-University Paper from the year 2022 in the subject American Studies - Literature, , language: English, abstract: It is thought that human empathy is related to common sense and is found in every individual. Yet, tragic and shocking things happen every day that make everyone doubt and question humanity. Due to recent events, such as the tragic and unfortunate death of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd, names that have become part of the collective knowledge of current affairs, the Black Lives Matter movement is gaining more and more public attention and recognition. Radical racism, a topic that is not only current in the media but also in our school and is dealt with extensively, makes me understand the importance of spreading awareness around that problem. Unfortunately, it is an issue that has always been present.Unquestionably, Harper Lee's book is one of the most influential books in American literature and simultaneously gives an impactful insight into the issues of the 1930s. Because of the renowned reputation and praise around the novel and additionally, because it is one of my mother’s favorite works, I have always been aware of this book. Due to this seminar, I actually got to read it myself, and it turned out to be very worthwhile. The selected seminar allows me to examine the novel, which also counts among my favorites now, more closely and extend the limits of my previous knowledge around this subject.Without wanting to anticipate too much in the introduction, it can be disclosed that in the term paper, I will address and focus on key issues of both this time, the 1930s, and this book, while drawing parallels between the narrative and the historical context. Along with the theme of racism, including unequal rights and prejudices of white society, the term paper is going to cover other important aspects such as the consequent lack of trust in institutions and the various viewpoints at that time. The whole will not only refer to one position alone, but the readers will be given the opportunity to understand the seriousness of the situation from several perspectives and viewpoints at that time, depending on the observer’s ethnicity, age, and social status. Ultimately, I want to be able to make a clear statement whether I can call this world-famous and repeatedly praised book a fictional and untruthful story or a realistic insight into this time, primarily using original sources.
