From 1996 to 2005 he was Director of the BGR and also of the State Geological Survey of Lower Saxony. Wellmer taught raw materials policy and economic geology at the Technical University Berlin.

Manfred Dalheimer worked for the mining companies Centromin Perú and Metallgesellschaft before joining the BGR. From 1991 to 1997 he was head of Mining and Environment, and from 1997 to 2003 of Mineral Economics. Since 2003 he has been head of International Cooperation, America. Dalheimer is a mineralogist and holds a doctorate in economic geology.

Markus Wagner is a specialist in the assessment and evaluation of mineral resources. Since 2003 he has been head of Mineral Economics as well as Mining for the BGR. He has worked as an exploration geologist, project manager and consultant in many countries. Wagner is a geologist and industrial engineer and holds a doctorate in mineral economics.

This fully updated textbook offers rules for quick and easy calculations based on the application of approximate data. It is intended for the economic geologist who deals with the evaluation of deposits at an early stage of development. The book provides both the student and the geologist in the field with a complete set of rules and methods enabling them to perform a quick initial evaluation of the deposit without the support of specialists or computers. All rules for calculations are illustrated with examples and the authors points out mistakes and pitfalls they have encountered during their careers. The case histories, exercises, metal prices and terminology, especially concerning "reserves and resources", have been fully updated in this second edition. New chapters discuss topics including the life time of deposits, derivation of interest rates for the net present value (NPV) calculations, the influence of political risk and the evaluation of mineral prospects without known mineralization.
Introduction.- 1 Conversions.- 2 First Estimates of Grade and Tonnages and Potential Grade and Tonnages.- 3 Dealing with Data of Multi-Element Deposits.- 4 Conversion of Geological Data into Mining Data for Ore Deposits.- 5 Introduction to Economic Evaluations.- 6 Metal Prices.- 7 Calculation of the Net Smelter Return (NSR) of a Mine.- 8 Production Lifetime.- 9 Calculation of Cost Data.- 10 Additional Economic Planning Methods.- 11 Economic Evaluations.- 12 Quantitative Valuation of Exploration Projects without Known Mineralization.- 13 Comparison of Deposits.- 14 Calculating Growth Rates.- 15 Equity Calculations.- References.- Appendix A: Diagrams for Conversion between Imperial and Metric Units.- Appendix B: Diagrams to Determine the Thickness Reduction Factors for Drilling Oblique to Strike and Dip at Different Angles of Inclination and Diagram to Determine the Optimal Angle of Inclination of Drill Holes for Drilling Oblique to Strike.- Appendix C, Part 1: Derivation of the Formula for Calculating a Density Equivalent of Sect. 3.5.3.- Appendix C, Part 2: Spreadsheet to Calculate Densities of Complex Ore.- Appendix D: Tables.- Appendix E: Problems Created by the Application of Geometrical Series.- Appendix F: Sources of Information, Internet Addresses, Abbreviations, Conversions.- Appendix G: Scales (for the Field Book).- Index.
This textbook is intended for those economic geologists, who deal with the evaluation of deposits at an early stage of development. It offers rules for quick and easy calculations based on the application of approximate figures. Both students and field geologists will find a complete set of rules and methods enabling them to perform a quick initial evaluation of the ore deposit.
