There was no Canadian declaration of War in 1914 although she had her own Canadian delegation at Versailles in 1919. Through this term paper I want to find an explanation of how the war overseas could trigger this national self-consciousness that is also described in the novel.Therefore this paper is supposed to examine this phenomenon from two perspectives. First, from the view social history and second from the view of literary studies.
