Beschreibung:

Mirriam Ganiso holds an MA degree in Sign Language from Rhodes University. She presently teaches Sign Language in Cape Town, an area to which she has dedicated her life. Russell Kaschula is professor of African Language Studies at Rhodes University. He is the NRF SARChI Chair: Intellectualisation of African Languages, Multilingualism & Education.
This book undertakes research into South African Sign Language. This is done against the backdrop of a global prespective in order to assess best practices. The book not only covers historical aspects of the development of Sign Language globally and in South Africa, but it also explores the role of Sign Language in education. It is suggested that Sign Language be recognised as a twelfth official language in South Africa. Furthermore, lessons from countries such as Sweden, America and Britain suggest that much still needs to be done in South Africa in order to create appropriate educational curricula and to further enhance the status of Sign Language.
