Jannis Kounellis ( 1936 in Piraeus), cofounder and one of the most important representatives of Arte Povera, designed a completely new, open work of art for the venerable halls of the Monnaie de Paris, the French Mint. As is the case for all of his works, for Kounellis what comes into play first is space, followed by the idea for filling it. Thus the catalogue as well as the exhibition consummate the development of his oeuvre on the basis of each of the spaces in which this vibrant art takes shape.

Wer die Ausstellungsräume der Monnaie de Paris im Frühjahr dieses Jahres betrat, hielt unwillkürlich den Atem an. Jannis Kounellis (*1936 in Piräus), Mitbegründer und einer der wichtigsten Vertreter der Arte povera, konzipierte für die historischen Hallen der französischen Münzprägeanstalt ein neues, offenes Kunstwerk, das mit dem Ort eine Verschmelzung der besonderen und wortwörtlichen Art eingeht. Wie bei all seinen Arbeiten kommt für Kounellis der Raum zuerst ins Spiel, die Idee, ihn zu füllen danach. So vollziehen Buch und Ausstellung die Entwicklung seines Werkes anhand der Räume nach, in denen diese lebendige Kunst jeweils Gestalt annimmt.
