Einsamkeit und die verzweifelte Suche nach Anerkennung im New York der 1980er-Jahre wurden ungeschönt vom kalifornischen Maler Patrick Angus (1953-1992) eingefangen. Das schiere Drama seiner expliziten Motive und seine überragend exakte Beobachtungsgabe, die im Kontrast zu einer schillernden Farbigkeit stehen, werden derzeit im internationalen Kontext als Wiederentdeckung gefeiert. Dabei ist das Sujet eines Künstlerlebens in der New Yorker Halbwelt - und damit unvermeidlich des eigenen Lebens - nur an der Oberfläche von Bedeutung. Vielmehr sind es die Sehnsucht nach Liebe, Freundschaft und Akzeptanz, die uns in seinen Gemälden und Zeichnungen universell und unmittelbar ansprechen.
