TING YIN YUNG (1902-1978) wuchs in der Provinz Guangdong (Konton) auf, die fu¨r ihren wirtschaftlichen Erfolg und eine progressive politische Haltung bekannt ist. Er studierte westliche Kunst an der Kunstakademie in Tokio ab 1921, wo seine aus Paris zuru¨ckgekehrten Studenten stark von Matisse beeinflusst waren. 1922 sah er in Tokio die erste Impressionisten-Ausstellung. Mit seiner Ru¨ckkehr nach China wurde er zu einem der fu¨hrenden Vertreter der chinesischen Moderne, in einem Land, das auch um eine neue zeitgenössische Kunst rang.
