In particular, the book introduces the role played by Chinese seamen in safeguarding Britain''s "e;maritime lifeline"e; during the second world war, and the efforts made by Chinese seamen to strive for equal pay and treatment for equal work. Because of the war, a large number of Chinese seamen stayed in Britain for a long time and some seamen married local British women. The book introduces their living conditions and so on. After the war, the British government, the British seamen''s union and the shipping companies ruthlessly repatriated most of the Chinese seamen, resulting in the tragic breakdown of many families.
