Anton Tschechow, geb. am 29. Januar 1860 als Sohn eines kleinen Händlers in der südrussischen Hafenstadt Taganrog, studierte Medizin und machte sich schon während des Studiums mit humoristischen Geschichten einen Namen. 1890 unternahm der bereits lungenkranke Tschechow eine Reise auf die Sträflingsinsel Sachalin, um von den Bedingungen im Strafvollzug im Zarenreich zu berichten. Bereits während seines Arztpraktikums wurde sein Stück 'Onkel Wanja' uraufgeführt. 1892-99 lebte Tschechow als Landarzt und Schriftsteller auf seinem Landgut in Melicho bei Moskau. 1899 siedelte er wegen seiner Lungentuberkulose nach Jalta um. 1901 heiratete er Olga Knipper, eine Schauspielerin, die oft die Titelrollen in seinen Stücken auf der Bühne des Moskauer Künstlertheaters spielte. Tschechow starb am 15. Juli 1904 in Badenweiler.
