This groundbreaking book argues that social science research has done little to explain why revolutions happen. Selbin argues that we need to look beyond the economic, political and social structural conditions to the thoughts and feelings of the people who make revolutions. We need to understand the stories of the past people use as they struggle in the present. Ranging from the French revolution to the Battle for Seattle, via Russia, China, Cuba, Vietnam and Nicaragua, Selbin shows how myth, memory and mimesis create, maintain and extend such stories. Identifying four kinds of enduring revolutionary story, "Revolution, Rebellion, Resistance" shows how they catalyse the changing of the world.
